It is widely accepted that technology offers new opportunities for mathematics learning.
Indeed, many mathematical apps have sprouted in recent years.
However, some apps do not harness the power of technology since they just present the same static content using a different medium.
Through the project “Technology Innovations for Mathematical Reasoning, Statistical Thinking and Assessment” funded by the
Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD),
our team of university mathematics educators design apps that can engage students through mathematical tasks and challenge them to investigate,
make conjectures, and apply their reasoning. We are constructing an organized repository of apps so that teachers can easily
identify the apps that they need to teach a particular topic as specified in the official curriculum. This project supports the implementation of the Philippine K to 12 mathematics framework,
as it recognizes the affordances of technology, including manipulable objects, measuring devices, calculators, computers, smartphones, tablets, and the Internet.
The apps, as well as teaching guides, designed by the team can be accessed at mathplusresources.wordpress.com.
Senso Eskwela Pilipinas
Senso Eskwela Pilipinas (SEP) is a DOST- PCIEERD funded web-based application that aims
to promote statistical literacy in Filipino students from grades 1 to 11.
It is adapted from an international project hosted in different countries such as the United States,
the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. SEP is an online repository for gathering,
storing, and retrieving authentic data that can be used for statistics teaching and learning.
Under the guidance of the teacher, students are tasked to accomplish an online survey.
Their responses will then become part of the SEP database that can be accessed for use in
different activities for statistical learning. Through this platform, authentic, relevant,
and relatable data are made available to teachers and students. Teachers and students can access their own class data.
Moreover, any user (including guests who do not need to register an account) can download a random sample from the SEP database.
Note: Account creation for teachers will be available at a later date. For inquiries, please email [email protected].
Assessment Tracking Philippines
Assessment Tracking Philippines (ATP) is one component of the project “Technology Innovations for Mathematical Reasoning,
Statistical Thinking and Assessment”. We believe that assessment is an essential part of education as it provides an avenue
for teachers to determine if the objectives of the lesson are met. Assessment also provides significant feedback that affects
instructional decisions and curriculum.
ATP offers an assessment of students’ basic skills in the fundamental operations involving whole numbers,
fractions, decimals, and integers. Reports of student performance in each type of test can be generated and downloaded.
We hope this will help teachers pinpoint the level of proficiency of students in key math areas.
